This legendary Sister Funk cut out of sunny Florida is almost unique in that it missed its chance to shine twice. Originally recorded as a hard-nosed James Brown inspired funk number, then again years later as a more open disco-soul inspired dance floor cut that fits in with the current trend of the new funky Northern sound. To say the OG 45 is rare is putting it mildly. The ONE time it’s ever appeared on eBay (badly listed) was around 2005, it finally sold to a very quiet stealthy London collector who will remain unnamed. The later version has popped up a few times however, yet routinely commands a $500 price tag. So it's safe to say there is at least $2500 worth of o.g action on this killer double sider 45.

‘For Me You Are’ is an old Andrews Sisters’ classic that has been reworked into a ska version with vocals from Mr Bongo's very own starlet Hollie Cook in collaboration with the infamous producer Prince Fatty. The dub versions showcase real tape echoes, heavy spring reverbs and alternate instrumental elements such as melodica, percussion and horns. All the dubs were mixed live in Prince Fatty’s studio in the same Rub a Dub style as was made famous in 70s Jamaica by King Tubby and others, i.e with fingers, late night vibes and re-arranged with a razor blade. Originally released on Ed Mongomery’s Context Music label, Regeneration Report never got the notice it deserved, mainly due to being a private pressing with bad distribution. The music is a tough blend of funk, jazz, no wave, and Latin. Just take the stripped down funkiness of ESG and combine it with the Last Poets’ funk militancy, Fela Kuti’s horn section hipped on free jazz from the 70s New York loft scene, then add a bit of Eddie Palmieri ‘s Harlem River Drive Orchestra and there you go. The reissue vinyl has been remastered by John Golden and is housed in an old style tip-on sleeve and includes liner notes by band founder Ed Montgomery. Highly recommended!

Two beautifully down-trodden bluesy popcorn sides here, with strong vocals from the criminally under-recorded Mamie Perry. There is so much character on show on these two melancholic sides, both recorded at the turn of the 60s - spinning out of the R&B that had ruled the 50s and clearly anticipating the arrival of the newly refined ‘Soul’ music genre that was about to take over. These two songs are on the cusp of that wave, and as you can plainly hear, there are strong traces of Jazz, Blues and more within them - soul music wasn’t merely the melding of gospel to R&B as many lazy spectators have had it.

Here we have the two big spins of killer‘70s Modern Soul/Funk/Boogie Crossover. Twinspin 45 ‘Hungry for your Love’ & ‘Slipped Away’ are both included here, each a sublime ‘70s dancer. ‘Slipped Away’ was first played on the rare groove scene in the early ‘80s and you could be forgiven for thinking Deborah Shotlow was Minnie Riperton as she was similar in range and texture. The flip ‘Hungry’ is an L.A Boppers style dancer with Doug Thomas on vocal duties, edited here to include the full piano breakdown and resolution. Simply the finest 70s soul from the strongest pedigree waxed onto 7” vinyl as it should have been!
