About Fat City Records

Fat City Records has been at the forefront of hip-hop, funk, soul, jazz, soul and all things in between since way back in 1993.

From its humble beginnings in Manchester’s Affleck’s Palace in February, 1993, it has become one of the leading online boutique record shops – its name synonymous with style and taste the world over.

Our wall of LPs in the stock room

After 16 years in Manchester, in which time it had launched its own label and club night, the store was faced with closure. Down in London, Jazzman Records owner Gerald Short rightly felt a shop with such an important heritage in the UK music scene should not be allowed to die. He stepped in, took it over and brought it down south.

Boxes on boxes on boxes of 45s - got to keep them filed and organised!

Today, it continues to build on its legacy of being the go-to destination for all forms of black and urban music throughout history.

Managed by music enthusiast and record lover Orsii, FCR has a small but dedicated team that passionately believe in their music – whether it's barnstorming 1950s rhythm and blues, the latest in forward-thinking hip-hop, the best in lost funk and soul treasures or must-have jazz, Latin and Afro represses.

MEET THE STAFF

Here is an introduction to the small but dedicated team that works behind the scenes here at Fat City:

Jazzman Gerald  Name: Jazzman Gerald
  Job title:
Jazzman
  Some things you like:
Music & records, cacti, Japanese food, cats, real ale, hawaiian shirts
  Some things you dislike:
Kenny G, rain, garlic
  Some info about you:
I started the Jazzman label in 1998 when I realised that the demand for
rare soul, funk n' jazz records far outstripped their supply. Prices of the original records were getting
higher and bootlegs were rife, so I decided to start a label determined to reissue my favourite rarities
legally, on vinyl, and with full respect to the artist, wherever possible telling their side of how their
records were made and their life in music. We continue the journey to this day and beyond, with our
family of labels including Jazzman, Jukebox Jam, Fryers, Soul Spectrum, SOUL7, FUNK45,
  Stark Reality, Popcorn and TTSHAKE.

Oh and who could forget the awesome Dragan from Vibrant Drive who we've been working with since the summer of 2011 to build and design the the FCR website.

We also work and collaborate with various other people but the list would become pretty long and we don't want to brag. If you're interested in getting some work experience in the music indusutry, feel free to drop us a line.

In a nutshell, that is the FCR team. Make sure you find us on Facebook, Twitter, Mixcloud and Mixlr.
